The years 2015 to 2025 mark the first decade of Shenzhen Biennale of Contemporary Art. Looking back, the Biennale witnesses how art, acting as a sensor of the city, has been reflecting on the city: from its early explorations of Shenzhen’s contemporary art itself, to intellectual inquiries into the relationship between art and urban space, and then to poetic meditations on the relationship between nature and the city under the horizon of ecological civilization—the Biennale has been deeply embedded in the urban processes of Shenzhen, as a philosophical practice unfolding in ongoing self-reference and the deferral of meaning. The current archival review of the past decade is an “unfinished” open framework, it invites us to re-enter the folds of spacetime, to unearth those suspended questions and unrealized possibilities.
