Born in 1963 in Kunming, Yunnan, Li Ji graduated from the Printmaking Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1987 and is currently a professor of Yunnan Arts University. Since the 1990s, he has been engaged in contemporary art painting and photography. His works have participated in various exhibitions of Chinese contemporary art across Europe, the U.S., and other countries, as well as art fairs in Miami, Madrid, Paris and Moscow. His solo exhibitions have been held in Essen (Germany), Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Chengdu and Kunming. His works are held in the collections of public institutions including the Fraissiras Museum (Athens), the Red Mansion Foundation (UK), David Roberts Art Foundation (UK), China Club (Hong Kong), Shenzhen Art Museum, Tsinghua University Art Museum (Beijing), Cheng Xindong International Contemporary Art Space, and Chongqing Yuelai Art Museum.
